Exeter Castle, known as Rougemont Castle locally due to the red rock of the hill on which it stands, was constructed in the late 11th Century for William the Conqueror.

The medieval parts of the castle are best viewed from the outside as the interior buildings date from a much later period when the castle became home to the Devon Assize Hall and Sessions House.
